M.U.M

I think the villain for M.U.M is the oil spill and the victim is the bar tailed god-wit because their diet consists mainly of fish, seeds and worms. The oil spill affects this bird, when the fish It eats swims in the polluted water and then when the bar tailed god-wit eats the fish the bird gets poisoned and falls ill and eventually dies. This bird is found in New Zealand and Alaska.

Tips for saving water

1.Turn the tap off when brushing your teeth and/or use a glass of water.

2.Take shorter showers to save water.

3.When washing the car wash on the grass so that the grass get’s watered aswell.

4.Keep drinking water in the fridge so that you don’t run water down the drain waiting for water to cool.

5.Only use the full flush when needed otherwise use the half flush.

6.Use watering cans or trigger nozzles when watering the garden.

7.Install AAA water saving showerheads

8.Only use the dishwasher and the washing machine when they are full.

9.When mowing the lawn dont cut the lawn shorter than 2cm

10.Plant during Spring and Autumn when the watering requirements are lower.

How i worked it out???

My household uses around 4601L of water per week. There are 3 people in my house and use 1534L per person . I worked it out by using some websites and my findings are listed below:

1. Water used in dual flush toilet                                                                                                                       5L x 35(flushes per week) x 3(people in house) = 525

2. There’s no leaking toilet in the house so total leakage per week is equal to 0L.

3. Total minutes spent in shower per person 7-mum ,   4-dad ,   10-Renee =21mins

4. We do not have low water AAA rated shower head,so water usage is  12L x 7days x 21(question 3)=1764L

5.Baths per week -0 baths so 0L

6.How many loads of washing per week= 3

7. We have a water efficient AAAA rated front loading washing machine:  40L x 3(question 6)= 120L

8.We do not try to save water in the kitchen so water usage is 525L per week

9. We have a garden with water efficient plants and use water saving tap devices- uses around 651L/week

10.When people in house leave tap on when brushing,it wastes 5L per minute. 2 don’t and  that wastes 14L per person per week so 2  x 14L =28L.                                                                                                              1 leaves tap running for 3mins  so: 5L x  7 days x  3(number of mins)= 105L

11. leaking taps- NO   this wastes 0L so 0L is wasted

12.We do not apply any water conservation measures for other general water uses that occur in the household - this wastes 1100L of water each week

13.We do not have a rain water tank – so no water is saved.

14.We have changed our household’s water usage  due to increased awareness of water scarcity – saving 217L a week.

Total water usage     =    4818L                                                                                                                       Less                                                                                                                                                             Total water saving    =      217L

Total water used       =     4601L ÷ 3 members in household

                                 =     1534L per person

The Greenhouse Effect Project

When I first began my project, my readings were the same but every 10 minutes when I checked things started to change…. Thermometer 1 was going up, then down, up, then down but on thermometer 2 it stayed the same or went higher!! I think this  happened because thermometer 1 kept changing because it was exposed to the wind-which cools it down and the heat from the sun-which warmed it up but thermometer 2 was covered by the jar this meant that the hot air was trapped inside and it wouldn’t cool down because cold air was not reaching the jar.It is similar to the the Greenhouse Effect on Earth because the Ozone layer is like the glass jar around the earth. It absorbs 93-99% of the suns ultra violet light which is harmful to life on earth.Since a hole is forming more of these rays are entering earth’s atmosphere making is hotter and contributing to global warming.

Robert Falcon Scott

Robert Falcon Scott was born on the 6th June 1968-29th March 1912. He was a British Royal Naval Officer and explorer who led 2 expeditions to the Antarctic Regions the first expedition, The Discovery Expedition from 1901-1904 went well but the second The Terra Nova expedition didn’t turn out as well. On this expedition, Scott led a group of five men to the South Pole on the 17th January 1912 but when they got there they found out that Roald Amundsen’s party had already got there first. On the way back Scott and his four men died because of a combination of exhaustion, hunger and extreme cold.

Douglas Mawson

Douglas Mawson was born in Yorkshire and moved to Australia as a boy.He studied geology at a Sydney University and he had been part of Shackleton’s Nimrod expedition,1907-1909.He had been offered a position on Robert Scott’s Terra Nova expedition but turned it down because he was planning his own expedition to chart a 2000 mile stretch of coastline to Antarctica directly South of Australia with 2 companions but little did he know that he would be the soul survivor in those appalling conditions.
